Join us as we open our 2016-2017 season with the infectious energy and gleeful storytelling of harmony-driven acoustic folk/Americana band Pesky J. Nixon, a foursome of New England Folk Festival favorites whose 2012 album Red Ducks, an all-covers affair taking on the songs of Tom Waits, Cyndi Lauper, Bob Dylan, and more, was the 30th most-played record on folk radio the year of its release.
Drawing influences from contemporary urban balladeers, rowdy southern bluegrass, and the sardonic yet wry wit of New England’s localized folk scenes, Pesky J. Nixon (PJN) creates a rich palette of musical versatility, with compelling harmonies and narratives and disparate instrumentation, from zydeco style accordion and virtuosic mandolin to a variety of tribal percussion and a myriad of string instrumentation – add in a hefty sense of both poignancy and humor, and it’s no wonder their live shows are well-known audience-pleasers. Their most recent release, Red Ducks, Vol. 2, continues their exploration of the work of their peers and progenitors with takes on songs by The Band, Peter Gabriel, Ryan Adams, Jeffrey Foucault and more; expect to hear some choice covers and a handful of sweet originals in the mix as they take the Unity House stage!
All Unity House Concerts take place at the Unitarian Universalist Society of Greater Springfield at 245 Porter Lake Drive in Springfield, MA – less than an hour from Northampton, Hartford, Worcester and the Berkshires, with easy access to Interstate 91.
Doors open at 6:30 for snacks and coffee in Friendship Hall ($1 donation per snack). Open seating at 7:00. Tickets $15 for adults, $5 for students w/ID – cash only, please!
